Is online dating safe or not?

Safety in online dating has been always a questionable topic. It’s not just that women feel unsafe. Men have their concerns too. Online dating has become a part of our today’s culture. The main reasons are the advent and application of technologies, ease of using this technology, free availability, increasing consumerism, a pool of desired people at one place, etc. However, when it comes to the safety of users, it becomes a debatable issue.

The main reasons are incorrect information in the profiles of users, inconsistency or deviation in the actual users’ profile and the profile listed on such dating sites, people misrepresent their intent on such dating platforms, psychological issues, etc. Vulnerability over the internet is not the problem that most online daters think. It is the non-compliance with safety rules that makes them susceptible to threats. Moreover, this vulnerability is in the real world also where a user can find a match with dubious intention.

However, there are certain guidelines that users can follow to avoid any kind of unpleasant situations:

  • Personal information safety first: When registering online on dating sites, it is best to create a separate email ID exclusively for this purpose. This will certainly help users when such sites bombard them with promotional messages. One can also create a user name that doesn’t contain his/her real names. A user must do all that is required to save his/her personal, financial, and social information. Also, in case if one would like to be assured of data not being misused, then one must search for popular and authentic dating sites that have robust data security, personal safety, and compliance mechanisms.
  • Be careful and alert while online dating: Users have to be vigilant and alert while dating online. Every user has to go through the profiles of prospective matches, study them, check and re-check them. This will certainly help to find the authenticity of the information provided in the profile. Moreover, if a user finds conflicting information or information not supporting other data provided in the profile, it is better to avoid such profiles. Being mentally alert is one of the sure ways to keep oneself safe.
  • Safe communication channels: As said earlier, it is always better to use a new email ID while chatting or video chatting online with prospective matches. It is always advisable to use the dating platform’s video chat feature rather than the personal IDs of Snapchat or skype or zoom. Moreover, while chatting or exchanging emails with the prospective matches, do not entertain any kind of weblinks to other sites. These links may redirect users to other potentially harmful pages containing viruses. Additionally, any request to transfer cash or any kind of heart-wrenching story insinuating a user for cash transfer must be avoided at any cost. Similarly, any user sending gifts for which one needs to pay customs or excise duty must not be entertained.
  • Decision based on confidence and logic: Do not let any kind of pressure make a user reveal his/her postal address. A user must believe on his/her gut feeling before making online dating and converting it to real-life dating. Additionally, take all types of precautions even while dating in real life such as selecting a place of one’s choice, avoiding any secluded places, letting a friend know about whereabouts of dating, keeping a friend informed, and letting him/her call while on a date to keep a check.

There are no hard and fast rules a user can follow that will make him/her decide whether online dating is safe or not. However, one can make online dating safer for him/her and find a genuine match.
